Four chilling systems for the Mediterranean's largest gas field.

Technofrigo by Clauger (formerly GEA Refrigeration Italy S.p.A.) was selected to provide process-gas chilling solutions for Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU) at the largest natural-gas field in the Mediterranean Sea. Located in the Shorouk Block with onshore treatment facilities in Egypt, this field required four custom-engineered chilling systems to support accelerated startup and ramp-up to plateau production phases.

The role of sulfur recovery

Natural gas extracted from wells often contains hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and other sulfur compounds that must be removed before delivery to distribution networks. Sulfur Recovery Units convert these compounds into elemental sulfur through controlled chemical processes. The Tail Gas Treatment (TGT) and Acid Gas Enrichment (AGE) sections require precise temperature control to maintain optimal reaction conditions and maximise recovery efficiency.
